Spot Checks

3:29 PM, Monday, 07 April 08. Charter Standard

Representatives from the County FA Charter Standard Committee have been busy visiting FA Charter Standard Clubs on match days. The first ever pilot scheme in England, was promoted last August in the County FA’s Handbook for season 2007/08.

Members of the committee started the pilot in October 2007 where they would turn up without any prior warning to the visit, but would make themselves known to the club officials and explain the reason for them being there. A form has been devised to ensure that the codes of conduct of the club are adhered by all members and officials at the club. This included behaviour of players, club officials and spectators on and off the pitch, towards opponents and referees. The away team is monitored in the same areas.

It is important for the County FA Charter Standard Committee Members to report both good and bad practices as to reward what is good and approach for explanations what is poor behaviour. Good practices will be forwarded to the respective leagues and can assist in making nominations for the Fair Play and FA Charter Standard Awards.

Examples of bad practices found so far are:

No Medical Kit
Incorrect procedure for when dealing with injuries
Shouting by parents from the touch line
Coaches from the same team disagreeing with decisions such as substitutions
Smoking by the manager when the match is being played
Bad/Foul language from players (especially U17’s)
Over shouting by managers towards players (U9’s)
Comments ‘You’ve won, and that’s what matters’ (to U8’s)
Attitudes of players towards referee (U14’s)
Poor pitch markings

Examples of good practice found so far:

Shaking hands
Managers helping each other when player is injured
Clubs Codes of Conduct laminated and shown in club house, changing rooms and toilets
Respect to each other
Fair Play
Accepting decisions which went against
Good spirit and good atmosphere
Positive encouragement from the touchline
Applauding good play shown by both teams
Showing respect to all

The process for achieving the FA Charter Standard status is by far not easy but very rewarding. A lot of clubs told us they found the Charter Standard helpful in providing the club with a focus in attracting players, volunteers and sponsors. We hope our Charter Standard Clubs continue to remind their club members, players, parents and spectators to behave appropriately and adhere to the Codes of Conduct set by each individual club. Showing bad practice will be reported and can lead to suspension of the FA Charter Standard status. HELP US TO STOP BAD BEHAVIOUR .
