Coaching Pathway

A modern coaching workforce requires a modern education pathway; one that is inclusive, flexible, easy to navigate, and fully supportive of all learners.

In 2014, The FA initiated a review of the core Coach Education Pathway.  The objective was to look at modernising the make-up of courses - from the Level 1 through to Level 5 - as well as the overall approach to learning, to improve the impact on the development of coaches at all levels.

The first two courses to be re-launched as part of this work will be The FA Level 1 and FA Level 2 in Coaching Football.

Theses new-look qualifications, which will go live from 1 August 2016, will now be more realistic and coach focused, with club visits scheduled at various points in the pathway and formative assessments taking place throughout.

The FA Youth Award Modules 1 and 2 will no longer be delivered as stand-alone courses in their own right.

Instead these courses are incorporated into the main FA Coach Education Pathway. The FA Youth Award Modules have always received a high level of positive feedback from learners, yet take-up rates are usually lower than the core coaching qualifications. It was viewed that the principles of The FA Youth Award Modules should be incorporated into the new core coaching qualifications to ensure all coaches have access to these principles and understand how to apply them to the environment in which they coach.

What do the new courses look like?

Each level of coaching course will have four different components:

  • How We Coach
  • The Future Player
  • How We Support
  • How We Play

These will be brought into one block for The FA Level 1 in Coaching Football and into three separate blocks for The FA Level 2 in Coaching Football. The way a candidate is assessed is also changing - it will now take place throughout the coaching course rather than a decision being made at the end of the course of learning as shown in the new FA Coaching Pathway:

The FA Level 1 in Coaching Football

This course will consist of 8 workshops built around four key areas; self (the coach), player, game and environment, linking directly to The FA Coach Competency Framework and England DNA.

The FA Level 1 in Coaching Football

The FA Level 2 in Coaching Football

This course will consist of 20 workshops, split into three distinct blocks (1. How We Coach, 2. How We Support & The Future Player, 3. How We Play).

The workshops contain further technical content from the England DNA, building on that learnt through completion of The FA Level 1 in Coaching Football.

Depending on the current qualifications you hold as a coach, it may not be necessary to complete all blocks of the new-look FA Level 2 in Coaching Football.  Because of this, the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA will offer coaches the opportunity to enrol on a course containing all blocks (1, 2 and 3) or alternatively you'll have the option to enrol on each block individually.

If you are unsure where you (the learner/coach) fit into the new FA Coaching Pathway and what you should do to progress, please see the frequently asked questions below.
