Under-18s Reach Cup Quarter-Finals

The Leicestershire & Rutland County Under-18 representative side is into the last eight of the FA County Youth Cup, following a 2-1 victory over their Durham counterparts at Holmes Park on Saturday (12th December).

Goals from Ben Bradshaw and Daniel Page sealed the win from the home side, who went a goal down early in the contest in what was Leicestershire & Rutland’s toughest tie in the contest to date.

Falling behind after just 15 minutes, Leicestershire levelled the score in the first half, with Bradshaw showing excellent control to weave past two Durham defenders before slotting the ball beyond the goalkeeper from distance. The midfielder had a hand in Leicestershire’s second also, working well with Jordon Nelson to release Page with a superb weighted pass, before the forward coolly lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to give the home side the lead prior to the half-time interval.

The second half provided a more even contest, with both sides having chances to get on the scoresheet without making their respective efforts count. The Durham forward found Leicestershire & Rutland goalkeeper Ethan Somaiya in outstanding form, with the home stopper performing a number of saves to ensure a Leicestershire victory.

Under-18s manager Nimesh Patel was delighted with his side’s performance, saying: “We knew Durham would be a good side, as they beat our Midlands counterparts Birmingham 3-1 in their last game to make it to this stage of the competition. We were forced to change things within the opening five minutes due to an early injury received by Tariq Wilson, which saw us alter our shape in formation. However, we dealt with the physical threat Durham provided and showed excellent resilience to come from a goal down to win the game.

“I’m proud of my side. They played for each other, and the commitment and passion amongst them is starting to bring rewards. It’s a great end to the year; winning all three of our games whilst scoring 11 goals and conceding just once. We’re looking forward to 2016.”

Squad: Ethan Somaiya, Joe Lee, Richard Black, Jared Rydquist, Charlie Scanlon, Jordan Connor, Ben Bradshaw, Jack Samples, Sam Grouse (c), Tariq Wilson, Jordon Nelson, Daniel Page, Max Lowe, Jamie York, Alex Ram
